Are the kids back in school mode already? It can be a tantrum-full transition from summertime madness to a school routine. But if you want the little learners to keep up, you need to remind them that learning can be a blast!
Today we will look at a fun alphabet activity - I is for iguana craft. It's a great way to teach children about the letter 'I.' Here's all they'll learn with this fun craft:
- Letter recognition
- How to write the uppercase letter
- How to write the lowercase letter
- The sound of the letter
- Names of a few things that come from the letter
Sounds like a good starter to me! Let's get started.
A Little About Iguanas
Confused learning is worse than no learning. So, before you start the craft (or during the process), make it a point to introduce the animal to your kids. They should know the basic details about what they are drawing.
Iguanas are big herbivorous lizards from the tropical areas of Mexico, the Caribbean, and South and Central America. These tongue-flicking, colorful sun-soakers belong to the reptile family. There are 35 types of iguanas, but green iguanas are the most common. A lot of people also keep iguanas as pets.
Decorating the Iguana Craft
No matter what material you are using for this craft (construction paper or card stock), you can decorate it to make it look appealing. Plus, the kids will really enjoy using different materials and experimenting with them.
Ready to try the craft now? Here are some ways you can help your students decorate it:
- Use googly eyes to add funny expressions to the iguanas.
- Stick glitter paper or fabric to decorate the iguana.
- Use colorful feathers for a unique look.
- Give your iguana an interesting pattern of dots!
- Attach craft sticks behind your iguanas to make puppets.
Now, you don't need to have all of these materials - use whatever craft supplies you have at hand. Creativity is key.
You could even ask the kids what they would like to add before they start crafting. Remember, your goal is to keep the little ones engaged.

How To Make I is For Iguana
Start by printing out the I is for Iguana template at the bottom of the page. Cut out the pieces of the template.
Next, trace the I on the light green paper and the other pieces on the darker green paper.
Iguana's Body
Cut out each of the pieces to make the Iguana body. For the scales on the back of the iguana, we like the idea of folding them in half.
Glue each of the legs to the bottom of the iguana's body and the scale pieces along the back of the iguana with the fold pointing up. This gives the illusion of the spikes that typically run along a real iguana's back.
Iguana's Head
Last, but not least, glue two googly eyes to the top of the iguana's head.
